History & Philosophy of Yoga taught by Terri McCollum (Jill will not be teaching)
December 9th & 10th, 2023
This is a core course for those in the 100hr TT program (Those who have taken our 200h Teacher Training can choose to go directly to History & Philo 2)
The historical and philosophical underpinnings of the yoga tradition stem back thousands of years. Understanding the philosophical and historical relationship modern yoga has with its predecessors helps to build our understanding and contributes to how we pass down this information.
This two part series will start from the beginning (as far back as we know it) and examine how it influences our contemporary understanding of the practice. For those wishing to add more philosophy into their teaching this will assist on the path of first attaining knowledge to be able to embody and eventually transmit it.
- Historical outline of Indus Valley and Indian subcontinent as it relates to yoga through the ages.
- The orthodox and unorthodox schools of Indian philosophy and why they are important.
- Classical Yoga/Yoga Sutras
- The most relevant schools of philosophy for the modern yogi – yoga, samkhya, vedanta.

January 20th – 21st, 2024
One of the biggest skills that we need as guides and instructors is our ability to communicate effectively. The way we bring movement and action into words and then transmit that message to others is crucial to our teaching and their understanding. Cueing, or the way we guide others through a practice, has a major impact on the outcome on their (AND OUR!) bodies and minds. The words we choose, the quality and speed of our voice, and the order of how we present information all influence the practitioner’s ability to absorb and interpret the information offered. At the STUDIO we use the voice almost exclusively as our way to transmit the practice. This workshop will enhance your ability to communicate clearly and efficiently what you want to say as well as simplifying your delivery so there can be SILENCE!
We will discuss theory around communication, however, this weekend will be full of practical application exercises for cueing themes and techniques.
We will explore the following topics:
-
Cueing with a strategic krama (order) to build clarity
-

The subtle body is a different way of mapping the physical and energetic bodies. Though we may never fully comprehend what is meant by those who imagined it, we can certainly do our best to understand the complexity of our energetic systems and how they interact with our physical understanding of body and mind. Once we have some idea of the subtle body mapping we will look at ways to embody this information and use it as a tool for sequencing our classes.

April 13-14: A Somatic & Yogic Approach to Trauma - Advanced Immersion Series at STUDIO MILE END

Trauma is what happens in the body when there is stress that is too big for us to handle.
In the last twenty years there have been massive shifts in understanding and defining trauma and its symptoms. Pivotal to this research is the understanding that trauma is not “just in the head”, but rather, it is stored in the body. These ‘body memories’ are a physiological response to an overwhelming event or too much ongoing stress over time.
It is essential for any professional working with people’s bodies to be trauma informed.
This means understanding how the nervous system works and our personal experience of trauma in order to be able to better support the people we work with in this capacity. Through an understanding of the physiology of stress and how it presents in us personally and culturally, we can take the first steps toward finding ways to respond in a supportive manner.
This workshop is for allied health professionals (therapists, alternative medicine practitioners, yoga teachers, life coaches, massage therapists) as well as anyone who wants to understand what trauma is from a somatic perspective and how to work with it for personal healing and also offer support within a professional context as an allied health professional.
The first section of this course is designed to help you understand how your nervous system works and how the body will do everything in its power to help keep you safe. We will invite your body into the conversation as the main guest. We will develop awareness of your emotional landscapes, your breath patterns and listen to your innate sensitivity to the messages your body communicates everyday.
Practical exercises based in kundalini yoga (kriyas), pranayama (breathwork), and somatic therapy (somatic means of the body) will be offered with guidance to help us re-connect to ourselves. We will learn how to support the resilience of our own nervous system by using integrated and embodied tools to help us identify personal triggers and our own coping mechanisms. This is an essential part of being able to show up for others.
This course will likely bring emotions, stress, and symptoms of trauma to the surface. If you have any information related to your trauma history or special consideration that you think are important for us to know, please reach out prior to the session so we can best prepare and collaborate with you. This is not a therapy group nor a substitute for therapy.
To recap, topics that will be covered in this session:
-
What is trauma and how it shows up in the body
-
Some tools to build resiliency by grounding and centering the body
-
Naming and feeling emotions to bring them into practice in healthy ways
-
Listening to the body and interpreting the messages it is sending
-
Noticing your own triggers and response patterns
